Meet Tory Day, of Tory Day Interiors

L&J: How did you get into interior design?

Tory: It started in 1993 when my husband and I bought our first home. We completely gutted & rehabbed it ourselves. A daunting project, but the two of us learned how to solve problems and figure things out. Then we were hooked.

L&J: How do you draw on your inspiration?

Tory: Nature walks inspire palettes for me. I'm always taking pictures of rocks and water. Sometimes clients bring me inspiration with ideas that they want to bring to life. I love to look at architecture and design magazines. If I am looking for design solutions, I might go to Pinterest or Houzz to see how others have handled things.

L&J: What design trends are you seeing in 2023?

Tory: In terms of finishes, I am seeing more neutral colors, lighter wood tones, natural stone countertops, and wood beams for example. Bold color is also coming back, and contrasting colors like black and white. Wallpaper is definitely coming back, especially prints that evoke nature. Those are popular right now.

L&J: What would you recommend to first time homebuyers?

Tory: Start with a budget to determine how much you can spend on renovating & decorating. It's a good idea to make a list of everything on your wish list so you can prioritize. Next, determine your style and a palette of finishes to help establish a direction as you move forward. This will help to give your whole space a cohesive look.
